nanowrimo conditioning

Posted on 08:17 by Unknown
Last night I went out with some friends to celebrate a buddy's birthday. We had fun until past my bedtime, and consequently I didn't write today's post for the blog (No. 3 on my list of top ten favorite literary sidekicks as part of Project BFF). Thinking I'd get to it in the morning, I went to bed.

Morning rolled around, and if you'll check the blog, you'll find that no Project BFF post came to be. I was too tired and felt sluggish. I could put blame on my late night, but that isn't entirely it. I realize I'm often tired, and it's because I'm not taking care of myself.

With 19 days until National Novel Writing Month begins, I realize I need to make some changes to ensure I can make it to the finish line a winner.

I completed my 50,000 words last month — barely, but a win is a win, right? — but it wasn't easy. Dishes went undone for days at a time. Fast food wrappers filled my trashcan. My whole house was a mess, but that wasn't the worst part. About two-thirds of the way through the month I developed a severe cold, which turned into a sinus infection. I lost my voice, I had a fever and I felt awful in general. I lost a few days of writing and had to make up for it at the end by staying up late into the night to write thousands of words to hit the mark.

I don't want that to happen this year. I want to stay on pace. I want to produce quality words, not just meet the quantity. I need to make changes. Just like a runner would before a marathon, I need to condition myself.

Right now, I'm setting myself up for failure. Check out the mid-morning snack I grabbed for myself at work.

Yummy, but zero nutritional value. It's OK once in a while, but lately this is a regular occurrence.

Here are the goals I will set for myself personally to enable me to better achieve my NaNoWriMo goals without losing my mind or my health:
•  Prepare healthy and delicious snacks in bulk so I won't be tempted to eat junk food.
•  Create healthy, but simple meals in advance that can be frozen and re-heated on busy writing days.
•  Set aside time several times a week to exercise — even if it is going for a chilly walk.
•  Drink more water and cutback on the pop, coffee and booze.

They key to all of this will be discipline, organization, simplicity and compliance.

In the next few weeks, I'll provide updates on my progress. I'll share any tips I come across that may be of assistance to others. I will also come up with my goals and plans to tackle the business side of NaNoWriMo, but that's another post.

Oh, and if you came here looking for Project BFF, never fear. I'll write it. Eventually. In an effort to get myself in gear, I'm attending my first Zumba class with a few of my friends this evening. Hopefully, I'll come back refreshed and ready to post tonight or tomorrow afternoon (after Reading in the Kitchen).
