Yesterday marked the end of Camp NaNoWriMo, and I fell short of the mark. Significantly. The goal was to hit 50,000 words and I finished with about 11,000.So what happened? Where did a I go wrong?
It came down to a few points:
• I was more interested in querying literary agents for my completed project.
• I stopped writing early in the month and never gained momentum again.
• I was caught up in details that weren't important instead of looking at the big picture.
No mysteries here. I didn't have my eye on the prize, and I so I didn't succeed. I could make more excuses for it, but that's all they would be. What I can do is learn from the experience.
So will I participate in the August edition?
I'm torn on this. Part of me wants to repeat success with the success I had back in November, but another part wonders if I have the energy and determination required to achieve this. Realistically, I don't know if I can. I'm starting a new job (at my same employer), I only have two more weeks with my nephew and I still have my mind on those queries I sent out.
Instead of officially participating, I think I will tackle the project on my terms. I still have goals I plan to hit every day, but they will be more flexible to work with my lifestyle right now. I also plan to focus more on quality over quantity.
I still recommend other people do this. I will participate in NaNoWriMo this November, though. It's too much fun.
